駱賓王（約640年—約684年），字觀光，又稱駱臨海，婺州義烏人，中國唐代官員、文學家、詩人，初唐四傑之一詩歌。一生著作頗豐，他滌除六朝綺靡文風，革新初唐浮豔詩體，為盛唐文學興盛拓開道路，在中國文學史上地位深遠，廣受後世推崇。
駱賓王7歲能詩，有神童之譽詩歌。約在唐高宗顯慶（656年-661年）年間，為道王李元慶府屬，後歷仕朝中及四川。高宗永隆二年（681年）夏，貶臨海丞。後人因之稱其為“駱臨海”。光宅元年（684年）九月，徐敬業（即李敬業）自稱匡復府大將軍，駱賓王為徐敬業起草《代李敬業傳檄天下文》（即《討武曌檄》），朝野震動。光宅元年十一月徐敬業兵敗，駱賓王下落說法不一：一說兵敗遇害，一說投江自盡，亦有傳說其隱姓埋名、落髮為僧。

Three thousand chambers draped in silk’s fine screen,
Twelve tiers of green mansions line the thoroughfare clean.
Gem canopies, carved saddles, horses bound in gold,
Orchid windows, carved pillars with jade dragons rolled.
Jade beam inions glow on plastered wall,
Gold and jade chime loud where lords and nobles thrall.
All lords and nobles serve the crown full near,
Roam north lanes dawn, south neighbors ere sheer.
Lu Jia shared gold to feast his friends with cheer,
Chen Zun cast bolts to hold his guests all year.
Clans Zhao and Li walk side by side each day,
Xiao and Zhu’s bond shall never fade away.
Scarlet phoenix walls fade in the sunset haze,
Oxen and dark carriages cut red dust’s blaze.
Knights hurl pearl pellets‘neath willow trees long,
Maids swing silver hooks down mulberry throng.
Courtesan blooms spread fragrance far and wide,
Light steeds and fine robes grace the knightly tide.
Yannian’s sister flies to palace halls high,
Lady Luofu rides forth with a thousand knights nigh.
Heart-knot ribbons bind two souls as one,
Twin boughs woven into garment’s soft spun.
Spring dawn’s cassia wine holds flavors manifold,
Autumn eve’s orchid lamps cast faint light untold.
Jade blinds and green curtains glow side by side,
Clear zither and lute each other’s tune abide.
We count life's days—thirty-six thousand bright,
Yet forty-nine years of wrong fade from our sight.
Glory and gain drift thin like mist of yore,
Weal and woe twist tight, hard to separate more.
Tian and Dou strove hard for power’s vain prize,
Soon Wei and Huo won martial glory’s rise.
Ere Jinling’s royal aura ebbed away,
Stone tomb texts laid the dead’s fate bare to stay.
Vermilion gates hold no young noble’s trace,
Who fears General Li by Ba’s pavilion space?
A hundred years wait every mortal soul,
All mortal shapes shall shift, transform, roll.
Cassia bloom’s sweet scent has faded all apart,
Where stands the grand feast at Cypress Beam’s heart?
Spring comes and goes, swift as a fleeting breath,
To strive for fame and gain is labor vain till death.
Long lodged in minor clerkship, luck I lack,
I sweep lord's gates, yet none my worth will back.
Once men bore pomp and splendor for a day,
Deeming their pride unbroken through a thousand stay.
Wings caught storm wind to soar up heaven’s height,
Then lost their tide, sunk low in mud’s dark blight.
Sparrows nest‘mid cassia boughs in vain,
Blue flies mar pure jade with a tiny stain.
Gold melts away, white silk takes altered hue,
Rank high or low reveals a friendship true.
Maids once fair grow grey ere new friends stand,
Plain grain and rough cloth make old friends disband.
Old comrades sink to dark forgotten gloom,
New acquaintances lack loyal heart’s perfume.
Han Anguo’s hopes burnt dead to ash and dust,
Judge Zhai trapped in net of slander’s unjust trust.
Enough! I turn my face to homeward ways!
Sima left Shu with verse that still amaze,
Yang Xiong served Han, no patron's kindly gaze.
Three winters' toil—I thought my worth would show,
Ten years unraised, through frost and sun I go.
Ji An's wood piled high, unused, in vain,
Sun Hong's gate barred—who lets me in from rain?
Who mourns for Changsha's exiled, unbefriended?
I bear Luoyang’s wit, yet none commended.

In youth I cherished knightly spirit’s fire,
Scorned empty official robes and desire.
I roamed the world to taste all mortal grace,
And dwelt at home to share my sire’s warm face.
Wandered bends of Ba River’s winding tide,
Moon and wind adorn Luoyang’s far side.
Though no jade feasts my humble board supply,
I spurn the chase of golden pellets high.
Golden shot and jade fare deck vain pomp’s display,
I deemed Shi Chong’s wealth trivial each day.
Five lords raced forth swift steeds of thousand mile,
Three broad lanes thronged with scented carriages file.
Carriages glint‘neath sunset’s fading glow,
Silken screens unfold to catch dawn’s soft flow.
Old pond’s still water hangs like polished glass,
Maids’new outshines all blossoms of spring grass.
My stormy valor faded like yesterday’s haze,
Spring and autumn wheel through countless days.
Willow catkins drift through royal gardens wide,
Plum petals fall in courtyard side by side.
Where roam the guests who lingered at my gate?
Old friends grow distant, scarce to congregate.
Let not grief wear my visage thin and pale,
Clear autumn winds shall lift the mist’s dark veil.
I lingered long within the capital’s bound,
Cold heat of idle years my spirit wound.
One day I donned rough cloth of humble grade,
Six long years served the palace corridor’s shade.
My verse falls short of Sima Xiangru’s art,
I grip spear, sigh for Yang Xiong’s lonely heart.
I bore forth blade from war tent’s martial space,
Carried my brush to Wenchang’s scholarly place.
Wenchang Hall lies hid‘mid palace walls tall,
Bright bards and scribes have thronged it one and all.
Pan Yue and Lu Ji’s sharp verse flew far and fast,
Zhang Heng and Cao Zhi’s pen power held vast.
No prime minister my name deigned to know,
No noble lord would rank my merit so.
I’d fish till white hairs crown my weary head,
Carry firewood, no friend my grief to read.
Fate deals out woe and weal as heaven’s plan,
Strange misfortune drives me west, drives me east again.
I’ll not be cast aside like dog of straw,
Drift loose like thistle down through wind’s raw law.
My sideburns shift their hue each passing year,
Spring bloomunfurlsthe same soft charm clear.
I’ve not fulfilled rites to honor my kin,
I yearn to serve my lord, my merit win.
I grease my cart, feed steeds, bid hometown adieu,
Wind reins southwest to Qiong-Bo’s far view.
Jade Mound and Bronze Beam stand steep to climb,
Earth’s farthest edge lies wrapped in mist sublime.
Orioles sing, cicadas hum sad longing lay,
Wild geese pass by, no letter on their way.
Yangguan’s thick fog shrouds ten thousand li’s space,
Jiange’s linked peaks wear a thousand hues’grace.
Shu’s road stretches endless, slow to trod,
Min mountain peaks block every forward rod.
My heart twists tight through nine sharp bends’sharp pain,
Two streams of bitter tears pour down my cheek’s plain.
I roamed a thousand li in wild unrest,
Wept loud in prison’s dark deep quiet nest.
Spirits haunt the market year on year,
Comet of ill omen glides through night’s sphere.
Five giants hewed the mountains with their might,
Four Shu sages shone with poetic light.
Stone Mirror spreads rosy dawn’s soft open haze,
Golden wheel hides cold fire’s dim silent blaze.
Blue cliffs and green caves soak in morning rain,
I pluck bracken fern through cloud and mountain chain.
Hand in hand we climb the precipice steep,
Who’d sit confined in hovel’s dull dark deep?
One day a royal envoy summoned me forth,
I journey ten thousand li to court’s north.
Once I knelt in audience with royal grace,
Rode side by side to palace’s high place.
Tall gates await four-horse carriages grand,
Wide avenues bear scented carts every land.
In youth my judgment lacked the world’s sharp sight,
I knew not how hard true friendship’s fight.
One kind word smells like cassia bloom’s sweet breath,
My heart holds strangers dear as orchid’s wealth.
When one true patron praised my verse and wit,
I spread my wings and soared where high winds fit.
I rose swift high to rank of noble name,
Stepped through all pure court posts of royal fame.
First trod the Imperial Academy’s floor,
Soon served close by the sovereign’s palace door.
In and out of audience halls I paced,
Served as attendant in all courtly grace.
Blest by royal favor, I drew small pay,
Sudden disaster stole my joy away.
Iron chains confined me to North Temple jail,
Captive’s rope bound my limbs without avail.
Shall judgment rest on both accuser’s word?
Harsh penal codes hang sharp as tempered sword.
Zou Yan wept grief confined in Yan’s dark cell,
Li Si endured Qin’s prison’s cruel spell.
My black hair turned to silver thread in haste,
The yellow sand like pitch my sight encased.
I cry for justice‘neath the palace wall,
Scarlet noble gates refuse my call.
I hear leaf fall, my startled soul doth shake,
My faint ghost fears the grave’s cold silent wake.
Frost’s harsh wrath reaches far across the land,
No stair to clear my wrongs, my grief to stand.
To whom pour forth my unjust suffering’s tale?
I swallow rage, trapped in my heart’s dark veil.
Then post messengers came forth from eastern pass,
Word spread the royal mercy flows ten thousand mass.
Dry fish leave rut to swim in ocean wide,
Caged bird breaks net to soar through heaven’s tide.
Shun and Yao’s kind grace extends its bound,
Yet slanderous tongues spread lies the world around.
Who dares crawl low beneath the capital's roof?
